How to Teach Your Dog to Sit
Sit is usually the first cue to teach. It gives your dog a simple, rewarded way to say "please" instead of jumping, and it is the base for many later skills.
Step by step
- Hold a treat at your dog's nose.
- Slowly lift it over the head; the bottom lowers.
- The moment it sits, say "yes!" and reward.
- Add the word "sit" after 5 reps.
Tips
Keep sessions to 2-5 minutes, use small soft treats, and stop while your dog is still eager. If your dog backs up instead of sitting, hold the treat closer to the nose and lift more slowly.
